Radishes anyone??

I harvested my first crop today, radishes, about a dozen!!  I then planted a second crop of them.  Some were getting pretty big too so I am glad I caught them now.  I was actually going out to harvest some lettuce greens for dinner when I happened to see the root near the top of the soil.  I hadn’t even looked to see when they were supposed to be harvested.  (just did 20-25 days) This is my second root vegetable ever that I have planted, carrots were my first when I was a teenager.  I still have to plant them (carrots) actually along with my potatoes.  It is getting late so this Friday I have off I will be planting.

Why radishes?

The radishes are for my husband, he loves them.  Me, not as much.  I was traumatized as a child with a radish if you can believe that.  I was in bible class and we formed two lines / teams.  At the end of each line was a chair.  The first person in the line sat on the chair, reached into a paper bag and pulled out a vegetable or fruit and ate it as fast as they could and then got off the chair for the next kid in line.  The goal was to race and see which team could finish first.  So when it came to me I grabbed a radish and when I bit into it, it was hot and bitter and just awful.  And the coordinators made me eat it!!  I had to run to the washroom and rinse my mouth out and since then I never ate one again, until tonight.  I cut it up and put salad dressing on it.  It is not as bad as when I was 4 years old.

And what about the rest of the garden?

So I planted more mesclun mix, radicchio (not much came up), oriental greens and radishes tonight.

I also planted 4 of my tomato plants, they are not exactly where I want them but I had to get them in the ground. I still have 9 more to plant.  The chickens left a bare patch in the lettuce garden for me so I think that is why not much radicchio came up.

My husband made two of the six planter boxes that we have left to do and we bought the black earth, sheep manure and peat moss that goes in them.  I am also going to get some of our compost in the boxes this year.  So since it will be nice this weekend we should be able to get a few of them ready.  I need to clean up two of the boxes I have left and get them ready to plant in as well.

Transplants don’t always work out

Some of my transplants didn’t turn out and I need to go buy new transplants to take their place.  I still have cucumbers and other transplants to put out as well.  So much to do and so little time.  There is no way to get the garden in all in one weekend.  I need another summer off!!!
