Strawberries, don’t ya just love ’em!!

I just planted 28 strawberry plants that I ordered from Vesey’s in PEI. http://www.veseys.com/ca/en/store/fruitsberries/strawberries/albion

They sent them in the mail a week ago and I was supposed to plant them right away but I just moistened them and put them in the basement.  I got to them today.  I am sure they will turn out fine as the roots were in really good shape when I planted them today.  It is supposed to be in the high teens all week too so it is good weather to plant those few items that need to be planted as soon as the ground can be worked.

I can’t wait to get my chicks this week, they are coming on May 1st.  I have never raised chickens before so this should be exciting.  I have the feeding tray, chicken feed, the water dish, a heat lamp bulb, need the ballast now (I think we have one in the garage) and I have a tote to put them in.  I need to pick up some bedding as well.  I need to read up on them again this weekend so I have everything ready when I go to pick them up.  I don’t think they need oyster shells as day-olds but I’d like to have everything I need for a while once they get here so I don’t have to run around looking for it if they need it right away.

I love gardening and I would love to be a hobby farmer, a few horses, maybe a goat or two, some sheep, chickens and maybe a few ducks.  I love all things country!  Today George Jones died, a legend in country music and today is the day I also found out about the Shropshire Sheep Case http://healthimpactnews.com/2013/canadian-government-destroys-heritage-sheep-herd-and-wants-to-send-farmer-to-prison/  I am now completely disgusted with the Canadian Government.  Basically I see it as they want to have very little diversity in our livestock so that the moment one pandemic hits, the whole line of animals goes extinct.

We should be doing everything we can to have as much variety in our animals and our seeds as we possibly can.  This is our world and we have the responsibility to take care of it for the future generations.  I am no tree hugger by any stretch of the imagination but I love the fact that I can buy heirloom seeds that have been saved from extinction and not have been genetically modified and eat those veggies or fruit and savour all of their richness.  Can you imagine a world with only one type of tomato, only one squash, only one cucumber, only one apple!!!  It is the same for our livestock.  If we were only left with milking cows where would we get those juicy Angus steaks?  Come on Canada Wake Up!!!!  There was nothing wrong with those sheep and they want to send this woman to jail for 12 years.  Are they smoking pot in Parliament when they come up with this stuff?

Seriously I can’t stand needless violence and especially death.  Yes put down the rabid dog, yes we can’t eat beef tainted with mad cow disease but these sheep were healthy and not to mention they didn’t even have to be eaten, they could have been sheered and the wool used for making clothes.  They could have been under quarantine for 5 years and the wool used to make gorgeous coats or blankets and they could have lived out their lives and been tested when they naturally would have perished.  What a waste!!  A waste of the lives of the sheep and a waste of good quality air being breathed in by complete idiots at the CFIA and the federal government as a whole.

Anyway I felt good working in the ground again, therapy for the soul after being so disgusted with how my country is being run.  Can Harper fix our country instead of picking on JT?  There are so many more important things to do in Canada and cyber-bulling and smear campaigns are not it!!
