Here chicky, chicky, chicky…

So our chickens arrived the first of May, very small day old peeps. I make it a point to pick up several each day for a little cuddle. I want them to be very used to people. I got four varieties and 13 chicks, including a rooster.

I check on them several times a day in their brooder. We got a cage for them but it had a plastic top and with the heat lamp on top I figured they wouldn’t like molten plastic on their wings so we coved the top with some baking sheets.

On of the cats thought they would be fun to play with so we also have cardboard walls inside the brooder.

When I came home today they had filled their water dish to the brim with shavings and also their food dish. After a quick cleanup their peeping went down to a dull roar. They are always quieter when they are fed and watered.

I came home today and quickly planted my mesculin mix, radicchio, oriental greens, radishes, beets and onions.

Only four beds left to plant in and I have so much more to plant.

I don’t seem to have huge success with planting seeds. I left my plants outside the last few nights and I put the humidomes on them the first night but forgot to take them off first thing in the morning and cooked my lupins. The cat sat on the first batch of lupins, they are determined not to grow for me. My tomato and pepper plants have some white on the leaves, I hope it is not from the cold. It hasn’t been lower than 6 degrees at night.

I went for the plunge and planted my seedlings in my hanging baskets so we’ll see how they turn out. My strawberries are doing great.

I am trying to get all of the seeds in the garden that need to be directly seeded as soon as possible. The weather today was great and 28 degrees.
